Workforce Needs in Licking County

Workforce development continues to be a key initiative for GROW Licking County. Supporting the development of the next generation entering the workforce is crucial for sustainable economic and community development. According to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, Licking County’s current unemployment rate is 3.8%, compared to 4% statewide. Some common barriers to employment include access to housing, transportation, and childcare.

Housing

Housing availability and affordability are important factors in the development of a strong local workforce. Potential employees need to be able to live within a reasonable distance in order to fill the available jobs in a community. This proximity reduces commute times and transportation costs, making it more feasible for workers to maintain steady employment. In turn, a robust local workforce supports the growth and stability of businesses, as employers can more easily recruit and retain employees.

Transportation

Another barrier to employment is access to reliable transportation. Without consistent and dependable means to commute, individuals may find it challenging to secure and maintain jobs, particularly in areas where public transportation options are limited or nonexistent. Licking County Transit recently launched a Deviated Fixed Route system. By providing this service, Licking County Transit helps to bridge the gap between job seekers and available jobs.

"Public transit is vital for communities as it helps connect people to things like jobs, education, healthcare, and more. It fosters inclusivity, reduces environmental impact, and enhances the quality of life for all residents, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to the opportunities they need to succeed,” said Matthew Alison, Licking County Transit Executive Director.

Childcare

The cost or lack of access to childcare has caused some parents to either leave or consider leaving the workforce. GROW Licking County is currently facilitating a Childcare Needs Assessment Survey to better understand how our households are navigating the current childcare environment. This survey intends to gather data that may help inform local solutions and support broader advocacy efforts that improve access to quality childcare in our community.

The survey questionnaire is open to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Licking County and takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Responses will not be attributed to an individual but instead compiled into a data set to investigate general trends. This survey is sponsored in part by Southgate Corporation. We invite you to participate in and share this survey within your organization and networks. This survey will be open until June 15, 2024.
